The Best Homemade Playdough Recipe

Today I am sharing the recipe for the best homemade play dough. I have been making this since my daughter was small and I just love how soft and smooth it is. I hate traditional play dough, there I said it. I just hate the smell and how it feels touching it. This play dough does not have a gross texture or scent. I do not have to worry as much about my kids while playing with it. Bonus, it only needs a few ingredients, most of which you probably already have lying around and costs less than a few dollars. Here is the best homemade playdough recipe. Let me know in the comments if you make it and like it!

The Supplies are minimal for this homemade play dough recipe, but it sure does make for lots of fun.

-Large Pot
-Gallon Size Bag
-Mixing Bowl
2 Cups All Purpose Flour
3/4 cup Salt
4 tsp Cream of Tartar
2 Tablespoons Vegetable Oil
-2 Cups Water (you may not use it all)
a few drops glycerin for shine and better stretch (this is totally optional though, the dough still comes together nicely without it)
-food coloring, also optional. I prefer a gel option, but any will work

Recipe for the Best Playdough Ever

This recipe comes together pretty quick and you will be playing with dough in no time.

Step 1: in a pot on the stove, boil 2 cups of water, if using food coloring, add it to the boiling water at the end before mixing it in with flour, don’t cook it in with the water the whole time
Step 2: in a large bowl, mix the flour, salt, and cream of tartar
Step 3: slowly add the boiling water to the bowl. Do not add all at once. Stir continuously until it becomes sticky and combined
Step 4: add the glycerin (optional)
Step 5: allow it to cool enough, take it out of the bowl, and then start kneading vigorously for a few minutes until the stickiness is gone. ***this is the most important step to get the best consistency. If it is still sticky, add a touch more flour.

You can add glitter, or sparkles to this for a fun addition. You can store this in an airtight container for up to three months!

I made a giant batch of this for my son’s birthday party favors and they turned out so cute. Let me know if you end up making The Best Homemade Playdough Recipe!
